Rapture or second coming: what is the difference?

At the rapture, believers are caught up to meet the Lord in the air and He does not touch the earth (1 Thessalonians 4:17). At the second coming, He returns visibly to the earth itself, His feet standing on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4), and every eye sees Him (Revelation 1:7).

The Ministry of Repentance and Holiness, led by Prophet Dr. David Edward Owuor, teaches that the rapture and the second coming are two separate events. Its statement of faith describes the rapture as the imminent, premillennial return of Christ for His holy Church, when the dead in Christ rise in glorified bodies and those living in holiness are transformed and caught up to meet Him in the air.

Many believers use the two words as if they mean the same thing. That is understandable — both describe Christ returning, and both are near one another in the same chapters.

But the descriptions do not match, and the differences are not small.

The word itself does not appear in English Bibles. Paul writes in Greek that believers will be harpazō — seized, or snatched away — which our translations render "caught up". The old Latin translation used rapiemur for that verb, and the English term "rapture" comes from there.

Read where the meeting happens. In the air. Paul does not describe the Lord's feet touching the ground. He describes the Church going up.

And it is instant — in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump (1 Corinthians 15:52). Not a process. Not a warning period.

Now read a different kind of description altogether.

Feet. Standing. A named mountain, east of a named city. This is not a meeting in the clouds. This is an arrival on the ground, at a place you could walk to today.

It is the same mountain from which He ascended. The angels told the disciples standing there that this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven (Acts 1:11).

And John writes: Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him (Revelation 1:7).

Every eye. Not only the Church. Not only those who were waiting for Him.

Set side by side, these are not two accounts of one event. They are two events described.

The ministry was founded in 2005 and is led by Prophet Dr. David Edward Owuor. It describes itself as a global end-time ministry raised to prepare the nations for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, and its central proclamation is stated in four words: the Messiah is coming.

On the rapture specifically, the ministry's statement of faith is precise, and every phrase in it carries weight.

Read the three phrases again.

Imminent means it requires no intervening event. There is nothing left on the calendar that must happen first. This is why the ministry preaches urgency rather than timelines.

Premillennial places it before the thousand-year reign described in Revelation 20, which distinguishes it clearly from the return to the earth in glory.

Holy Church and living in holiness are the phrases that shape everything else. The ministry does not present holiness as an optional depth for the serious believer. It presents it as the condition of those who are caught up.

That is why this ministry's message is not primarily about prophetic sequence at all. Its stated message is to repent, be holy, and prepare the way, because the Messiah is coming. The teaching on the rapture exists to produce repentance, not speculation.

Because the two events have two different audiences, and that shapes what preparation means right now.

The rapture is for the Church. Paul frames it as a comfort to believers rather than a warning to the world — wherefore comfort one another with these words (1 Thessalonians 4:18).

The second coming is public and universal. Zechariah places it at Jerusalem. Matthew 25 places the judgement of the nations immediately after it. It is not a gathering of the faithful; it is the Messiah returning to the earth in the sight of everyone who has ever refused Him.

If the two were one event, there would be nothing to prepare for now — the whole matter could be left to the end. Because they are two, and because the first comes without announcement, preparation is a present matter and not a future one.

The ministry teaches that the Church is taken before the tribulation begins, and the word imminent in the statement of faith carries that meaning: nothing stands between the Church and the catching up.

The scriptural reasoning rests on several passages. Christ promises the church at Philadelphia: Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth (Revelation 3:10). The promise is to be kept from the hour, not merely preserved within it.

Paul writes that God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:9). And in the chapters of Revelation that describe the tribulation itself, the Church is not named upon the earth.

Other believers read these passages differently and place the catching up within or at the end of the tribulation. But notice that on every reading, the instruction that follows is the same, and it does not change with the sequence: watch.

No, and this is where a real distinction has to be held carefully, because urgency and calculation are not the same thing.

Not people. Not angels. Mark records it more sharply still — neither the Son, but the Father (Mark 13:32). And when the disciples asked one final time before He ascended, He answered: It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power (Acts 1:7).

So no date can be given, and no calculation from prophecy can produce one.

But Scripture is equally clear that the season can be recognised. Jesus gave the fig tree: When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors (Matthew 24:32–33).

Nobody looking at a fig tree can name the date summer begins. Anyone can tell that it is close.

This is exactly what the word imminent means, and it is why it is not the same as a prediction. Imminence says nothing stands in the way. A prediction says the day is known. The first is what Scripture teaches. The second is what Scripture closes.

No, and Jesus said so directly, because He knew what would be claimed.

Lightning is the whole point of the comparison. Nobody has to be told that lightning happened. Nobody reads about it afterwards.

So the test is simple, and Jesus gave it to us Himself. If anyone claims that Christ has returned quietly, and has appeared to a particular group in a particular place, that alone is enough to know the claim is false — not because of what else the person teaches, but because Scripture has already ruled out the manner.

The rapture comes without announcement. That is precisely why preparation cannot be scheduled.

Jesus ends Matthew 24 not with a calculation but with three parables in a row — a servant left in charge of a household, ten virgins with lamps, and talents entrusted to be accounted for. Not one of the three concerns timing. All three concern the state of things when the master arrived.

The ministry's statement is that the Church has entered a critical season of preparing the way for the Lord Jesus through righteousness and holiness. So what does Scripture name as readiness?

1. Repentance that is current rather than remembered — repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out (Acts 3:19)
2. Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14)
3. A garment kept clean — those in Sardis who had not defiled their garments were promised they would walk with Him in white (Revelation 3:4)
4. Obedience in what has already been made clear — if ye love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15)
5. Perseverance — he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved (Matthew 24:13)
6. Prayer and alertness — watch ye therefore, and pray always (Luke 21:36)

Every item on that list is something that can be done today. None of them requires knowing a date.

And notice how the ministry's statement of faith describes those who are caught up. Not those who understood the sequence. Not those who had worked out the timing. Those living in holiness.

Whether He meets the Church in the air or His feet touch the mountain, the question is the same one that runs through the whole chapter. Not when did you think it would happen. But what were you doing, and how were you dressed.

A servant who loves his master keeps the house ready because the master is coming. That is reason enough, and it is the only reason we have been given.
